Why Does Food Noise Get Louder During the School Holidays?

I noticed it myself.

On the very first morning of the summer holidays, I woke up and the first thought that popped into my mind was…

“Shall we go for an ice cream?”

Later that day, the grandchildren had an ice cream… and then we all ended up going for cake.

I remember thinking…

“What on earth is going on?”

Then I realised exactly what was happening.

When the children are off school, life revolves around food.

Breakfast…
Snacks…
Picnics…
Ice creams…
Days out…
Cafés…
Barbecues…
Treats…

It suddenly feels as though food is everywhere.

And if you’re trying to lose weight or quieten the food noise, it can feel exhausting.

Is eating with the children the problem?

Not at all.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with sharing an ice cream or enjoying a slice of cake with your family.

The problem isn’t the food.

The problem is what happens afterwards.

You really only have two choices.

Choice One

Eat the cake…

Then keep eating because you’ve already “blown it.”

Feel guilty.

Promise yourself you’ll start again on Monday.

Become trapped in that familiar cycle of guilt, overeating and food noise.

Choice Two

Choose to eat it…

Or choose not to.

But make the decision intentionally.

Listen to your body.

Are you actually hungry?

Or are you simply eating because everyone else is?

If you decide to enjoy the cake, enjoy every mouthful.

No guilt.

No punishment.

No shame.

Just a conscious decision.

Of course, eating cake and ice cream every day may lead to weight gain, and you probably won’t feel your best.

But enjoying an occasional treat with your children or grandchildren doesn’t have to become a spiral of guilt.

This is the perfect time to remember ARCHIE.

Meet ARCHIE™

A – Ask

Ask yourself…

“Do I really need this right now?”

Pause for just a few seconds before making your decision.

That tiny pause can change everything.

R – Remember Your Reasons

Why did you start this journey?

What matters most to you?

Will eating this help you move closer to your goal, or further away from it?

There isn’t a right or wrong answer.

Simply make a conscious choice.

C – Cravings Are Temporary

They really are.

Food noise can make it feel as though the ice cream van is calling your name or the bakery is impossible to resist.

But cravings rise…

And they fall.

If you can wait just a few minutes, you’ll often discover the urge has already started to fade.

H – Hydrate

Sometimes your body isn’t asking for food at all.

It’s asking for water.

Before reaching for the snack, have a large glass of water and give yourself a few minutes.

You might be surprised how often the craving disappears.

I – Imagine

Imagine how you’ll feel afterwards.

If you eat it…

Will you genuinely enjoy it?

Will it satisfy you?

Or will it leave you feeling disappointed because you weren’t really hungry?

Now imagine walking away.

Would you feel empowered?

Proud?

Relieved?

Or would you still choose to enjoy it because that’s what you truly wanted?

There isn’t a perfect answer.

There is only your answer.

E – Exit (or Engage) Intentionally

Ask yourself what you really need.

Is it food?

Or is it comfort…

A break…

Connection…

Rest…

Or simply something to do?

If the answer isn’t food, gently step away.

Exit the food noise.

Remember…

You are in control—not the cake, not the ice cream, and certainly not the food noise.
